Veteran's Story Day
Time: Saturday, November 8, 10am - 3:30pm
Location: National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum,  NVVAM 1801 S. Indiana, Chicago, IL

In recognition of Veteran’s Day, 2008, Vocalo.org and the Center for Digital Storytelling joins with the Iraq Veterans Against the War (Chicago) in a one day workshop to capture the short personal stories of veterans and their families in audio and images.  The workshop is free for veterans and their families.  The workshop will be led by staff and supporters of Vocalo.org, and CDS founder and Executive Director, Joe Lambert from Berkeley, Ca, along with CDS volunteers.

Veterans and their families can participate in several ways:
  a)  Attend one of the story circles, where you can share your stories with other vets. (TIMES TBA)

b)      Drop-in the recording area to be interviewed by a staff member from Vocalo.org or CDS.
c)      Drop-in the recording area to create your own digital story. Staff from Vocalo.org or CDS will help you to write out your story, record it, and edit it for the radio. We also welcome pictures that we can match with your story.

To participate or further questions email carrie@storycenter.org.

Vocalo.org is a community media website and radio station 89.5 FM.  Vocalo.org is a place for people to compose and share stories -- including images, audio, and video -- with their fellow users. User-generated content is broadcast on the radio station (89.5 FM) as well as made available on the website for licensed remixing. Vocalo.org also engages the community with free "Media Creation Workshops" in Chicago-area communities.

The Center for Digital Storytelling is an international training and media arts organization with offices in 9 cities in the U.S., Canada, and Denmark.  Since 1994, Joe Lambert and his colleagues developed the Digital Storytelling Workshop which is a method of training and facilitation in digital media that is now used by schools, universities, activists, social workers, and media artists around the world.  CDS has helped others to create more than 12,000 short videos.

Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, 2008 11:00 am
5500 North St. Louis Avenue
Chicago, Illinois 60625

On November 11, 2008 at 11:00 am, at Northeastern Illinois University, the Student Veterans Club of Northeastern Illinois University will have a ceremony commemorating the Iraqi and Afghanistan service personnel who have given the supreme sacrifice for their country. Several years ago, on this campus, a student veteran of the Vietnam War spearheaded an effort to establish a “Peace
Garden”, to commemorate the service of the men and women who have fallen in service for their country in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The “Peace Garden” has a display of dog tags hanging from a wall. Each dog tag represents 1 casualty of this war. There are now over 4,000 casualties of this conflict and we, as veterans on this campus, believe we should commemorate this sacrifice with an appropriate Memorial Dedication
Ceremony. We will place a Memorial Bench and a Bronze Plaque in the “Peace Garden” during the ceremony and memorialize their ultimate sacrifice.
There will be a number of Veteran Organizations that are interested in attending and participating in this Dedication Ceremony. I would like to extend an invitation to you on behalf of the Students Veterans Club at Northeastern Illinois University, to participate in the Dedication Ceremony.

For Veterans Day, parking will be available on the 4th and 5th floors of the parking garage at no charge.
