The Cook County Assessor’s Office administers property tax exemptions that may lower a veteran’s property tax bill.

For veterans returning from active duty in armed conflict, the Returning Veterans Exemption provides a $5,000 reduction in the equalized assessed value of their property for the taxable year in which they return.

The Homestead Exemption for Veterans with Disabilities is for veterans with a service-connected disability as certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The exemption reduces by certain amounts the Equalized Assessed Value (EAV) on the primary residence of a veteran with a disability, very likely lowering the tax bill. The amounts of those EAV deductions depend on the level of disability. Veterans 70% or more disabled receive an EAV reduction of $250,000, and because of this can be totally exempt from property taxes on their home.

Military Outreach USA is sponsoring the premier showing in the Chicago area of “Trauma Comes Home.”

This documentary film addresses the effects of the so-called “invisible” wounds of service, PTSD and Moral Injury, on our military active duty, Reservists, National Guard, Veterans, First Responders and their families.

These insidious conditions are among the significant causes of the present high suicide rate in our military community.

This documentary completes a trilogy of films produced by Crosswinds Foundation of Birmingham, AL. a faith-based non-profit partner of Military Outreach USA. 

The first film, “Invisible Scars,” dealt with PTSD and the second, “Honoring the Code,” with Moral Injury.

Trauma Comes Home specifically addresses the impact on the families, a subject presently overlooked in the media and research material.

We hope to help fill that gap by educating the public and encouraging those suffering with these illnesses and their loved ones by providing education, hope, and examples of assistance available. 

We will be having two showings for Chicagoland and Wisconsin.
